How to Stop Waiting to Feel Ready to Declutter

It sucks, doesn’t it, when you know exactly what needs to happen but you still want some extra motivation or inspiration.
I mean, the drawer is right there in front of you.
That shelf in the closet is screaming for some love.
The bag you dropped 3 weeks ago that you've been meaning to go through.
The pile that's been sitting on a chair so long the chair has forgotten what it's for.
You can see it all so clearly.
You could probably describe it in detail.
And you're still not addressing any of it.
This is another place people get stuck.
They're waiting to feel ready.
Waiting for a free weekend.
Waiting until the kids are older, the schedule clears, or the stars align.
And while they're waiting, the clutter waits with them.
Patiently.
Indefinitely.
If you've been telling yourself you'll get to it once you feel more motivated, more organized, more in the mood—let’s clear something up.
That feeling isn't coming first.
Not unless you’re really lucky.
Ready doesn't come before action.
Ready comes from action.
Doing is what makes you ready for more doing.
To be clear, this isn't a pep talk although you’re welcome to use it for motivation.
I’m simply laying out how it actually works, every time, for everyone to get started.
I'm not a therapist, and this isn't therapy.
Although reading this and then taking action might be therapeutic—but ultimately, how you feel about your stuff may never completely change.
And that's okay.
Because getting things done, regardless of how you feel, still gets you the results you want in your physical world.
So here's what I suggest you do.
Pick one thing that's been teasing or taunting you.
Not a room.
Not a category.
One thing.
Set a timer for 15 minutes.
Not because 15 minutes will solve everything.
Because 15 minutes will prove to you that you can start.
If your ADHD or neurodivergent mind says 15 minutes is too long, make it 5.
Or 2.
Starting is the biggest thing standing between you and the home you actually want.
Here's what I know after decades of doing this work.
The first 60 seconds are the hardest.
Every time.
For everyone.
Even me.
But something shifts once you're in it.
Resistance drops.
Momentum builds.
And the part of you that was dreading it starts to feel something else entirely.
Satisfaction.
The satisfaction that comes from a decision made.
A thing handled.
A small piece of your life back.
That feeling is available to you today.
Not someday.
Right now.
Pick the thing.
Set the timer.
Start here.
And if you're ready to take this further than one drawer, Unstuff Your Life! walks you through exactly how to build on this momentum, room by room. Check it out here.
