Imagining American business without women

September 22, 2017

Women have steadily been increasing their numbers in the workforce as employees and business owners over the past several years.

In the U.S, the gap between the percent of men and women in the workforce has been slowly closing.

According to the United States Department of Labor, in 2010, women comprised 47% of the total workforce in the United States and were projected to account for 51% of the increase in the total workforce from 2008 to 2018.That statistic may finally kill the outdated expectation that has confined women to the home when they would also like to be working in the world.

Stay-at-home parents of all genders play significant roles in the overall fabric of our world.

And women who want to or even have to work should have equal access to training, opportunity, and advancement.

That’s the focus behind American Business Women's Day.

Look around you or look in the mirror.

Today is the day to celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of women in the workforce.

It’s also a chance to unite businesswomen in America as they pursue professional and personal growth and development.

Together, women can encourage and aid each other to reach their goals.

And the lucky men that are around them can be thoughtful and supportive allies.

Luckily, there are several ways that you can participate in American Business Women's Day.

HOW YOU CAN HELP CELEBRATE + PROMOTE

There are networking opportunities online as women everywhere share their stories on social media.

By actively searching the hashtag #AmericanBusinessWomensDay you can read others' inspiring and humbling stories.

You can interact and share your stories as well.

The American Business Women's Association, which sponsors the day, also offers opportunities for education and development.

I’ve had the privilege of speaking at the New York chapter of ABMA on organization and time management.

ABMA gives women instant access to a network of strong, successful businesswomen.

And there are many other organizations that support the growth and success of women in business.

Check out these TED talks as well for a shot of electricity and excitement while you celebrate the diversity of working women around the world.

And these TED talks will remind you of why we need more women leaders.

Whatever you do today, be sure to acknowledge the smart and talented women who surround you every day.
