Andrew Mellen 30 Ideas to Simplify Your Life in 30 Days 750x540Creating clutter is simple. So is getting and staying organized.

I’ve watched people twist themselves into all kinds of knots trying to get and stay organized.

It looks uncomfortable and complicated.

Brain surgery is complicated.

Quantum physics and string theory are complicated.

Organization? Easy as 1, 2, 3.

While my book, Unstuff Your Life!, contains much more than three simple rules—since it’s a “how-to” book—at its foundation is The Organizational Triangle®.

One Home For Everything, Like With Like & Something In, Something Out.

One Home For Everything means everything.

I promise you that anything that doesn’t have a home will get lost or misplaced. And you will end up wasting time looking for it, working around it and possibly replacing it.

Time you could have spent doing something else.

Tomorrow we’ll tackle the second leg of the triangle, Like With Like.

Today’s challenge: set a timer for 60 seconds and settle into your breath, then set the timer for 7 minutes. Grab a laundry basket or shopping bag or tote or box—any container will do. Walk around your home and collect every item that doesn’t currently have a home in the container. Tomorrow we’ll find them homes. Pay attention if you’re sweeping up your keys, wallet or cell phone in that basket—you may want THEM before tomorrow!

Advanced challenge: If you’ve already done this before:
set the timer for 7 minutes and walk around your home. Put everything laying around that’s not currently IN its home back where it belongs.
