From a conversation with Michela O’Connor Abrams, President of Dwell Media
If you love smart design, green products and solutions for simpler yet elegant and luxe living, you’ll want to visit Dwell on Design NY.
It’s a great showcase of clever solutions to real urban living challenges, delivered in a fun and accessible way.
While there this week, I had a chance to sit down with DwellMedia’s president, Michela O’Connor Abrams, and ask her about her own relationship with organization, productivity and procrastination.
She shared that her biggest clutter hotspot is her nightstand—it’s become the command station in her home … while waiting for the new command station in the kitchen to be built.
So like most folks, everything ends up there—the mail, important documents her husband and daughter don’t want her to miss, things waiting for “someday” and her solution for cleaning it up is:
It’s that simple.
Rather than leaving it up chance, she’s learned that setting aside specific amounts of time on a specific day is the key to actually getting something done.
It’s so nice to meet kindred spirits!
So if you’re struggling with procrastination, if you’re waiting for inspiration to strike—make an appointment with yourself instead. It will guarantee that the thing you’re putting off will get your attention.
That’ll get you much closer to checking it off your list than wishing or hoping will.
Today’s challenge: set a timer for 60 seconds and settle into your breath, then set the timer for 5 minutes.
Get out your to-do list, find ONE THING you’ve been procrastinating and make a real appointment with yourself to do it. That means committing to a specific date and time to tackle it, not just saying I’ll “try” to get it done maybe on Saturday.
I promise you the satisfaction of completing it will far outweigh any sense of overwhelm you’re currently feeling staring at it on your list.
