July 27 - 29 Carmel Valley, CA Weekend Retreat
Tassajara Zen Mountain Center
Getting to What Matters: More Love, Less Stuff!
“Unstuff your life” and transform your relationship with material, mental, and emotional clutter to discover the heart of liberation.
Join Andrew and Kansan David Zimmerman for this special retreat, intended for everyone and anyone who feels overwhelmed in daily life. You may have too much to do and not enough time to do it, struggle with managing time and resources, or simply feel stuck or disconnected. Or perhaps you lack space in your life for what you are most passionate about due to organizational clutter, habitual mental and emotional “grasping,” and ongoing confusion about personal priorities.
We will examine how—through attachment to conditioned stories about what we need and who we are or “should” be—we often become the agents of our own dissatisfaction and unhappiness. Through core value exercises, organizational techniques, meditations, and group discussions, we will learn how to successfully slow down, quietly reflect on what is essential, and make real and lasting changes for a freer, more spacious, and happier life.

"Reading this book is like having a private organizer in the house asking pertinent questions and gently pushing solutions. For comprehensive help with a cluttering problem, Mellen's book is excellent!" Deborah Bigelow, Library Journal Review
"Living in chaos? Professional Organizer Mellen has written the book to help. At 400 pages it's not for the faint of heart or the semi-committed, but for readers determined to bringing their stuff under control. "There's no magic device and you don't need to be rescued," Mellen assures, advocating ways of streamlining that don't have to break the bank. He begins by the front door, with creating a place to locate your keys and mail, and then moves through the house from room to room, starting in the kitchen; sentimental doo-dads (the most difficult to abandon) are the last to go.
While Mellen at times ventures into Martha Stewart's turf ("Create a paint schedule!"), he's closer in temperament to his mentor, Oprah. For those having trouble letting go of their stuff, he says, "Identify with the willingness to shift your behavior," and move bravely forward ... Mellen is not a sentimentalist, he's a tough life coach, and many readers may have trouble pairing down as much as he'd like. But those willing to take even a small sip of Mellen's Kool-Aid will enjoy a more organized, efficient and well-managed life." Publishers Weekly
